ConorKostickI was reading an economics article about how online games were generating characters that sold for as much as $2,000 on eBay. The journalist said that if you add up all the trades, the total was over $40bn dollars. That triggered a thought in my mind that I found every exciting. What if we lived in a world where all of us had to play online for our real income and social status? What would happen in such a world? I decided it would evolve in a way that became very unjust and that this would provide the core drama of the story. The fact that I'd played a lot of these games and seen cliques of 'elite' players form that tended to bully and show off to newer players gave me some idea of how the story would feel, emotionally speaking.
